San Juan la Laguna, one of the seven villages surrounding the infamous Lake Atitlan, is renowned for its community of artisans. Employing the back strap loom technique, skilled artisans weave ikat designs, imbued with symbolic meaning. The process of creating an ikat design involves marking out the required pattern by binding together different sections of the raw thread. The yarn is then dyed and woven using the back strap loom.
